Sponsoring 320 children in 11 partner schools
Sunbird Trust is a non-religious, apolitical non-profit organization with its national office at Bangalore. It was formally launched on 11 Dec 2014 as a registered Trust. It is governed by two Trustees and supported by a Board of Advisors.
India’s North Eastern region has suffered conflict for decades. The young often do not have access to basic education and disaffected youth are prone to radicalization.
Sunbird trust reaches out to underprivileged communities irrespective of religion, caste or race and works to bring about lasting peace and progress through education.
Sunbird works through grassroots volunteers, women’s self-help organizations, youth groups and village development councils. We enable positive change cycles through a network of beneficiaries who become our contributors to support education and self-reliance for the next generation.
Areas/Domains of Work
Financial Access to Education: We provide scholarships to underprivileged children through a “Sponsor a Child” scheme. We augment this support by helping enable nutrition, uniforms and books. Beneficiaries are selected through an application process on a means cum merit basis. We support these children’s education to Class 10, subject to a child’s performance.
Physical Access to Schools: We ensure that children from remote areas can attend schools by supporting the construction of low cost hostels and where possible, arranging transport for children where no public transport is available.
Information Access to Opportunities: We provide children and youth access to information concerning education and employment. This is done via Enabling Centres in hub locations facilitated by local volunteers and equipped where feasible with the internet and a library.
Alumni Support Network: On a selective basis, we sponsor exceptional students up to graduation with emphasis given to all round individuals who have the potential to become future community leaders. Students supported by Sunbird become members of our alumni network. When they graduate they willcontinue to engage with Sunbird by contributing financially and in-kind.
