Overview of the Initiative

The Skill Development initiative aims to empower youth from North East India with employable skills and provide them with employment opportunities by partnering with top institutions across the country.

Why Skill Development?

In Northeast India, various challenges have led to a lack of skilled youth in the communities:

High unemployment among youth

Many educated young people remain jobless due to lack of employable skills beyond formal education.

Financial constraints & dropouts

Poverty forces many students to leave education early.

Geographical isolation

Remote and hilly terrains limit access to education and job opportunities.

Limited awareness beyond government jobs

Aspirations are restricted to government roles, which are limited and highly competitive.

Lack of career guidance

Students often drop out after Class 10 or 12 due to absence of counseling and exposure to career options.

National Priority:

India is home to one of the youngest populations in the world with nearly 65% under the age of 35. This youth power holds immense promise, but only if equipped with the right skills.

The National Policy on Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (2015) highlights apprenticeship as a powerful way for young people to learn by doing, gaining real-world experience while earning a livelihood. It’s a model that blends learning with earning, helping youth become job-ready and self-reliant.

At Sunbird Trust, we believe that skill development is more than training, it’s empowerment. By connecting education with hands-on learning opportunities, especially in remote and conflict-affected regions of Northeast India, we aim to nurture a generation of skilled, confident, and future-ready youth who can build stronger communities and a stronger India.

In 2024, due to conflict in Manipur, Doipakkim and his family faced severe financial difficulties and lack of opportunities. While staying in a relief camp, he came across the Sunbird Trust Family, who helped him relocate to Bangalore. There, he pursued a Diploma in Home Health Care and completed a six-month training at Bangalore Baptist Hospital. After completing the course, he was offered a job at the same hospital as a nursing assistant. Today, he continues to work there and credits Sunbird Trust for being the foundation of his career.

Camp to Career in Healthcare

I completed my 10+2 in Assam and later moved to Bangalore in search of opportunities. Through Sunbird Trust, I was connected with SAATHIYA, where I joined a three-month Food & Beverage Hotel Management course. The training equipped me with valuable skills, and I received a placement at Welcomhotel by ITC, Bangalore. I am truly thankful for the guidance and support I received throughout my journey.
