Mr. Mataisang Shirak, a passionate educator, established Alpha Christian High School at Kachai in Ukhrul District of Manipur in 1995. This was after deadly ethnic clashes of the early 1990s in the state forced him to return home from his teaching stint at a school in Senapati. Returning to his village, he found that the conflict prevented many students from studying outside the village. The financial condition of their parents was also substantially impacted. Having given up the opportunity of a secure government job as a teacher, he made up his mind to set up a critically needed school to meet the needs of the lesser-resourced children in the area. With the unstinting support of his family, the school started from scratch. The Alpha School today serves some of the most underprivileged students in the area, most of who are unable to afford to pay their full fees. Despite all challenges, Mataisang stands firm in his mission to give these children the best future.

Seeing Mataisang’s track record of service and commitment and the passion of his entire family, Sunbird Trust commenced partnering with Alpha School in 2021. The entire school complex is being rebuilt. A man of many abilities, from procuring materials for the construction of new buildings to painting the school buildings himself, he overlooks all Sunbird projects at Kachai. He is also a great English teacher and a talented musician. Mataisang is imbibed with an endless curiosity and a desire to acquire new knowledge. In the evenings, he is to be found near the quaint fireplace in the kitchen of his home, sipping a cup of the famous Kachai lemon tea.
