Discoveries and Changes
Coming up to celebrating four years in this space, I find myself reflecting on how much has changed. My time has been a continuous discovery of nature’s wonders. I’ve marvelled at the variety of fruits and edible leaves here, still amazed that I get to enjoy these treasures for free. I’ve grown used to photographing the “ugly” insects and have built a tolerance for them. I’ve learned to make do with whatever resources I have, especially when craving cakes or wine, finding joy even in my frequent failures. I’ve also found a special kind of joy in losing my network connection; it often means quiet nights in the paddy fields, where I can relax and enjoy fresh groundnuts.
I’ve been amazed by the creativity and intelligence of the people I’ve met. Above all, I have learned to be happier, more grateful, and kinder.

Sunday Community Visits
My journey at Sunbird has been filled with countless moments of magic and colour, each leaving a lasting impression. One experience that particularly stands out is our initiative of the ‘Sunday Community Visits’ at Alpha Friendship School, Kachai. These visits, where we connect with students’ families, have been enlightening and enriching. The warmth of laughter, the bonds of love, and the spirit of togetherness permeate every interaction. I’ve been deeply moved by the generosity of parents who, despite their challenges, share what they have — fresh vegetables and heartfelt stories.
These moments reinforce the importance of building trust and understanding within our community, reminding me of the incredible resilience and generosity that exists within it.
Sunbird Peace & Friendship Curriculum
One of the most fulfilling projects I’ve contributed to is the Sunbird Peace & Friendship Curriculum. This project aligns perfectly with my longstanding passion. From planning the sessions alongside the dedicated team to the exhilarating execution of the pilot program, every step was infused with purpose and excitement.
Witnessing the transformation in students’ expressions and mindsets was remarkable. Operating in diverse and often challenging environments, it was gratifying to observe stereotypes dissolve and genuine dialogue take root. The power of meaningful interaction became evident as barriers melted away, fostering deeper understanding and empathy among students.
Engaging in such work reaffirms my belief in the profound impact of education on fostering harmony and understanding. Moments like these remind me why I am drawn to iniiatives that promote dialogue and mutual respect.
Daily Adventures
Each day at work feels like embarking on a new journey and living a cherished dream. I love the fact that every day looks different and there is so much uncertainty — it drives me. More than anything, it’s the people — their love, warmth, and openness — that have made this place feel like home. I’ve wrapped myself not just in the beauty of sunsets but also in the culture, language, and everything this place has to offer. Every day here feels like living a dream.
Stories by the Fireplace in Kachai
The evenings by the fireplace have been a sanctuary for countless stories, each a testament to resilience and lived experience. Listening to these tales often brings me to tears — not out of sadness, but from a profound sense of privilege to witness such depth and strength in the human spirit.
Looking Ahead: A Note to Sunbird
In this journey, I’ve learned to embrace uncertainty and find beauty in the unexpected. Each experience, whether a triumph or a lesson learned, contributes to a vibrant landscape of growth. As we celebrate Sunbird’s 11th anniversary, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to this incredible community. Thank you for the unwavering support, inspiration, and the countless memories we’ve created together. Congratulations to everyone for reaching this remarkable milestone! She holds a degree in Political Science from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi, and a postgraduate degree in Development from Azim Premji University, Bangalore. With experience across education, human rights, and livelihood initiatives, Ayushi is passionate about strengthening school systems and exploring the role of education in building peaceful and inclusive communities. She enjoys literature, music, dance, cooking, and travel.
