As a part of Rural Living and Learning Experience (RLLE) program designed by my university, I visited Kachai village in Ukhrul district of Manipur under the guidance of Sunbird Trust. The learning has been immense and this experience will be cherished lifelong.
I was very excited about this wonderful opportunity to go to Manipur, a completely unexplored region for me. It allowed me to live among the rural communities and be a part of their culture. However, I did have many questions before I came here. These questions were mostly around managing my living, food etc. but they all took a back seat once I received the warmth and love from the community. I had reached Kachai in the month of December which is usually a time of celebration for the villagers due to Christmas and New Year. This celebration extends till January for Sports Day, followed by Kachai Lemon festival. The village has picturesque views and a pleasant climate. There was not a single time when I didn’t feel like a part of their family and culture. The place offered me a safe space to unlearn the learnt.
I would also like to appreciate Sunbird Trust for doing such a commendable job across North East by being an active change-maker. As education becomes the most important tool for transformation of society through enlightenment and empowerment, their vision of ‘Peace Through Education’ is definitely a way forward to building a better world. Kachai has a team of three Sunbirders who are working with Alpha Friendship School on infrastructure, mentoring the teachers and guiding the students. They have been a great source of help in making my journey smooth and fun.
I am really thankful to my host family and the organization for providing me with the best. I have taken a bag full of beautiful memories and meaningful experiences. If given an opportunity, I would love to be in Kachai again and re-connect with the organization to explore more such opportunities that will contribute to its vision and mission.
